Has anyone installed barrel bolts in the LMI precarved bolt-on necks for the neck attachment method? I picked up a set of the bolts (referred to a k-d bolts, furniture bolts, etc. in previous threads) at the local Ace hardware today. I noticed however that the barrel diameter is 3/8” which I think is pretty standard but the LMI tendon depth is only 9/16”. That means that if the barrel is located at the very back of the tendon, only 3/16” of wood is left from the barrel edge to the front frace of the tendon. That does not seem like a sufficient amount to prevent splitting when the neck bolts are tightened.

I'm with Terence. 3/4 tenon, and I use barell bolts that are 10mm in diameter.

Threaded inserts are another common solution to this problem, but I think you should be OK with the barrel inserts as well. A test on some scrap will convince you, I'd guess.

if the joint is tight and the bolts are all lined up right, then the KD bolt system will take an INCREDIBLE load. Some people glue the joints aswell so that'd solve any worries......

except that you'd need to steam open the joint for a neck reset.
